Hall Pass Free Full Movie

I was just reading an article about the oddly prolonged adolescence of American males, especially those in the movies. There's a common fantasy where the guys get away from their wives and girlfriends, and escape to where they're free to guzzle beer, eat sloppily, belch, fart, leave pizza boxes on the floor, scratch their butts, watch sports on TV, and in many other ways become irresistible to hot chicks. When was the last time you saw a man under 30 in the movies who had a stable marriage, a job, children, and a life where he valued his wife above his buddies?

The plot of the movie is meh. It involves the lads and their posse being cycled through several unsuccessful and quasi-slapstick situations showing their cluelessness, immaturity and how women easily see straight through them. Meanwhile, the wives and their posses have a great time on a getaway retreat. Women seem to get along perfectly well when set free from men, but men seem uncomfortable without women. It probably all involves which gender has the greater need to be reassured.

hall pass free full movie

Hall Pass, for its part, has the sort of water-cooler premise that raises eyebrows and sells tickets. Like the million-dollar hook of Indecent Proposal, the "hall pass" concept fits beautifully into a studio logline: The wives of two middle-aged men grant them a weeklong break from marriage. The rationale? If they're given the opportunity to work out their false nostalgia for bachelorhood, then they won't grow to resent their wives for taking away their freedom. (And in this case to resent being tethered to hideous ogres like Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate.)

Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis are funny together as Rick and Fred, best buddies and eager beneficiaries of the titular gift. Having grown impatient with their leering and dirty jokes, their wives, played by Fischer and Applegate respectively, have offered the "hall pass" as a smart gamble, pegging their husbands as too weak to hunt gazelles on the Serengeti. As Rick and Fred spend their nights prowling suburban hot spots on the order of Applebee's, the women steal off to Cape Cod, where they discover opportunities of their own.

Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) are best friends who have a lot in common, including the fact that they have each been married for many years. But when the two men begin to show signs of restlessness at home, their wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) take a bold approach to revitalizing their individual marriages: granting them a “hall pass,” one week of freedom to do whatever they want…no questions asked.

In the context of school, from elementary school to high school, a hall pass is a written note or a physical object that gives a student permission to be outside the classroom. This sense of hall pass is recorded as early as the 1930s.

As a metaphorical extension, a hall pass can be used beyond the context of school to describe a situation where something that would not normally be permitted is allowed. For example, an actor might get a hall pass for a terrible performance in a movie because they are so charming in real life. The expression free pass is used in a similar way.

As a slang term, a hall pass is used to refer an agreement between a couple that they can have sex outside of their relationship, generally on a temporary or one-off basis. Hall pass is specifically used to refer to permission for one partner to sleep with a celebrity without consequences. The term is recorded at least by the 2010s. Hall passes may be a regular thing for a couple or a new development in their relationship.

This is not meant to be a formal definition of hall pass like most terms we define on Dictionary.com, but is rather an informal word summary that hopefully touches upon the key aspects of the meaning and usage of hall pass that will help our users expand their word mastery.

Parents need to know that this "hard R" comedy is as raunchy, scatological, and irreverent as you'd expect from a Farrelly brothers movie. The plot -- two husbands (played by Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) get a one-week reprieve from marriage and its attendant responsibilities (including fidelity) -- hints at what the movie's like. Expect full-frontal male nudity (as well as a breast-flashing scene), lots of sexual innuendoes and graphic discussions about sex acts, drinking and drug use (pot brownies), and frequent swearing (everything from "butt" to "f--k").

Lifelong friends Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) have grass-is-greener syndrome; even though they love their wives, Maggie (Jenna Fischer) and Grace (Christina Applegate), they can't stop checking out other women and imagining what it would be like to bed them. After one humiliation too many, the women decide to give their husbands a one-week "hall pass," allowing them to step out of their marriages for seven days and pursue whatever -- and whomever -- they want. Little do they realize that the hall pass applies to their wives, too... Chaos ensues when everyone attempts to embrace the notion of freedom, only to realize that love and marriage are more complicated than their "simple" plan.

HALL PASS is a foul-mouthed, raunchy, ridiculous, sometimes gross, and inevitably funny movie. It goes all out with jokes inspired by bodily functions gone awry and situations played strictly and outrageously for laughs. In enough moments, it manages to carry it all off, primarily because the humor is so brazen that you're shocked into submission (though one particular scene involving full-frontal nudity is just on this side of too much). But there are also plenty of groan-worthy scenes that could just have easily been left on the cutting room floor. The tired, sexist jokes about wives should have been relegated there, too, as well as one (or two or three) scatological jokes.

Without Wilson, this comedy would be insufferable; somehow, he makes it sort of likeable. The actor -- who has played enough eternal-bachelors-gone-good -- now does doting dad and distracted husband quite well. His transformation actually seems plausible. But as funny as he is, Sudeikis' Fred is overdone: He's a callous, crass, hormone-driven character who doesn't quite come across as genuinely changed when his arc comes to its (formulaic) end. The movie could also have done with fewer predictably quirky friends and engineered-to-be-nutty moments. Credit goes to the Farrelly brothers for handling the wives' response to the hall pass with some complexity, but in the end, the movie doesn't quite earn a proverbial pass for its transgressions.

Cut to Carrie Palmer, who is celebrating her 10th wedding anniversary with her husband, Justin. Instead of spending time with her man, Carrie enjoys wine and gossiping with her friends Beth and Lexi. They talk about a woman in the neighborhood giving her husband a hall pass. (One other woman, one time.) Beth admits that her husband gave her a hall pass, and she used it.
