To help assist with ANR's asset inventory, this guideline will provide instructions on looking up necessary device information such as Model number and Serial number. A device is considered to be a desktop or laptop computer, a tablet, or a mobile phone owned by the University of California.


Choose Apple Menu > About This Mac to get an overview of your Mac, including your Mac model, processor, memory, serial number, and version of macOS. To see the greater detail provided by System Information, click the System Report button.

Older tablets may have the SNID or serial number label on the underside of the MicroSD/SIM card cover. If you are unable to locate a physical serial number label, you can find this information in the tablet operating system. Use the following steps to to retrieve the SNID or serial number within the operating system:


If you bought an Intel Boxed Processor, the information about the number of the processor along with other information like the batch number (FPO) and the serial number (ATPO) are listed on the packaging box.

While you can use Task Manager to view the memory specs information, if you want to determine more specific details, such as manufacturer, part number, serial number, and more, then you have several commands.

The WMI and the WMIC commands give you command-line access to Windows Management Instrumentation and let you view the details of your hardware and software. We're going to use WMIC to get the model and the serial number of the installed hard disks:


It's a good idea to register your device using the serial number in the manufacturer's database. This way, the hard disk's manufacturer will know that you own this device, and you'll have an easier time whenever you might need to use the warranty.

With the October 2018 update, versions of Creative Cloud and Document Cloud are only available if deployed via named user licensing. On November 30, 2019, many customers will also be affected by expiring serial numbers. To avoid interruption and to access the latest versions of the apps, customers must migrate to named user licensing. For more detail, see the announcement.


Serial numbers have a finite lifespan, and a number of serials are expiring through the end of 2019. While most customers can and should migrate from serial numbers to named user licensing, re-serialization is possible for those needing to remain with traditional serialization.


If you are using the Wizard to configure the application prior to deployment, enter the license information in the user interface as described in the user documentation. Doing so writes the serial number information to the abcpy.ini file. This file needs to be placed in the same directory as the MSI used at installation time.


Deployments that use EXE files require that the Setup.ini file contain the serial number information for the application. For example, during a bootstrapper Setup.exe deployment, the EXE file reads Setup.ini to get the needed information. You can set this up manually as follows:


You can quickly retrieve any Macs serial number via the command line by using the ioreg or system_profiler command and grep for the serial string. Getting the serial number from the command line like this can be helpful for troubleshooting, Single User Mode, remote management with SSH, or for many other reasons, though most users should opt to find the Macs serial number this way from the Apple menu or from System Profiler, the Terminal app method is valid for advanced users and for many other reasons.
